Obtaining a residence permit in Switzerland through education
Those who intend to study and live in Switzerland should have enough information about visas and immigration methods in Switzerland. These requirements are different for citizens of EU countries or the citizens of European Free Trade Association compared to citizens of third countries or other countries.
In order to study at a Swiss university, you must first choose your field of study and then be accepted into a university. Once your admission is confirmed by the university (enrolment certificate), you can apply for a student visa in Switzerland.
For short courses (up to 3 months/90 days) – summer courses, language schools – you will need to have a short-term Schengen C visa; For longer periods (longer than three months), you need to have a long-term National D visa.
You cannot enter Switzerland on a 3-month tourist visa and then convert it into a student residence permit. Therefore, if you intend to stay in this country for more than 90 days, even if you do not need an entry visa, such as citizens of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia or Singapore, you will still need to apply for a residence permit.
How to apply for a visa in Switzerland?

After entering Switzerland
You must register your arrival 14 days after arriving in Switzerland and apply for a residence permit at the cantonal immigration office. While you are waiting for your B visa (which may take several weeks), you will be given a certificate stating that you can open a bank account in Switzerland but will not be allowed to leave the country. B visa will be issued to you as a biometric card and it is valid for one year and can be extended.
Foreign graduates in Switzerland
After completing your studies, you can obtain a residence permit which allows you to stay in Switzerland for another six months to find a full-time or permanent job. During this period that you look for a job, you can work up to 15 hours a week. This permit cannot be renewed or extended after six months.
Postgraduate education
If you want to pursue a master’s or PhD degree in Switzerland, you can apply for a residence permit but you must have a place to stay and a job offer. In such cases, the employer will apply for a residence permit on your behalf. These kinds of residence permits are valid for a maximum of two years.
