Differences in the retirees’ accommodation in Austria and Portugal
You must live in Austria or Portugal for six months a year to extend your retirees residence, which does not need to be consecutive, and you only have to fill six months in a year. You must show that you have 22,000 Euros in your account and 20,000 Euros per companion. You do not have to put money in our or the Austrian lawyer’s account but just in your account. On a Portuguese pension visa, you show 9,000 euros for the main person, 4,500 euros for the spouse, and 3,000 euros for each child in your account in Portugal. An Austrian retiree must show that one has a proper financial condition, asks the Austrian government to live in Austria, and will cover one’s expenses elsewhere. So you cannot work for the first four to five years, and you cannot work as an employee in Austria. You can have your business, buy and rent property, run a restaurant, or invest in franchises, but you cannot be someone’s employee. You can work with a Portuguese pension visa, and you can both be someone’s employee and have your business.
The retiring applicants must know that the codes and capacity are limited in Austria. For example, the government announces that only five hundred people can register in a certain period. Therefore, those who have registered earlier can apply, and if they are more than five hundred, their application will not be accepted. However, there is no limit to the Portuguese retirement visas’ capacity, and the government will consider the individuals if they apply for Portuguese retirees’ residence during the year. You can obtain residence for both your parents and your spouse in the Portuguese Retirement Visa by showing that they are financially and physically dependent on you. Besides, the Austrian retirement visa process is time-consuming and may take several months to complete.
