Migration of doctors by work
Doctors who have a medical degree and wish to pursue a medical career abroad must obtain a residence permit by work. After choosing a country, one of the challenges for doctors to work in other countries is their medical degree equivalence process. There are different conditions for doctors’ degrees equivalence in different countries. The applicants usually must participate in equivalence tests and several matching courses in each country. Since physicians are in direct contact with ordinary people and have sensitive jobs, they must be fluent in the native language of the destination country.
Migration of physicians by study
Another group is doctors who want to study abroad. The fields of medicine and dentistry are quite popular, and many people tend to study abroad. These people use education as a way to migrate. Many universities in the world’s top countries offer these courses, many of which require tuition fees. However, some universities give free medical education to students. However, these universities have entrance exams for medical students, Like German and Austrian public universities. People who want to work in that country after finishing their studies must pay attention to the job market of doctors in that country.
Migration of doctors by investment
The well-off physicians who work and earn money in their own country and intend to receive residency in the best countries in a field other than medicine can obtain residency in other countries by investment methods. Many investment methods in the top countries can lead to residence for doctors. Investment in European countries, Canada, or New Zealand, has more favorable conditions. The applicants who use this method will achieve two goals:
- Earning the first-class residence for the applicants and their family members
- Increasing their capital by investment

Some of these doctors want to spend their retirement in a foreign country. These people do not want to work abroad and only want to get a first-class residence in a country. They can apply through several methods, such as self-protection, Golden Visa, and buying a property. The best countries for these people are Austria, France, and Spain.
Migration of doctors by marriage
People who marry citizens of other countries can obtain that country’s residency. This method is not just for doctors. The countries usually have a law called “family reunification,” which says that the citizens’ spouses can obtain that country’s residency or citizenship. Most developed nations do not differentiate between marrying a man or a woman citizen in that family reunification law. Usually, by marrying a citizen of these countries, you will first obtain a residence permit for a few years and then receive that country’s citizenship. You must prove that your marriage is real and that you do not intend to obtain residency by a formal marriage.
Migration of doctors and obtaining citizenship by birth
The applicants must examine the destination country’s laws if they want to obtain residency by birth. The countries usually have two different approaches to acquiring citizenship by birth.
- Some countries follow the blood law, and citizenship is passed on to the child through the parents. It means that if one or both parents have the citizenship of that country, the child born to them will also acquire that country’s citizenship, no matter where it was born.
- Some countries are subject to land law, which means that every child born in that country acquires citizenship. Countries usually do not grant residency to parents in this way, so it is not one of the recommended methods for immigration.
Migration of doctors by asylum
Some applicants choose asylum because they do not have enough information about its conditions. We first need to have a definition of a refugee: A refugee is a person who is at risk of being persecuted, tortured, or killed by one’s government because of one’s religious or political beliefs, participation in specific groups and activities, different sexual orientations, etc. The Geneva Convention was created to support this group, and its followers guaranteed that they would grant asylum to these people. There is less than one percent who has asylum status, and unfortunately, in recent years, some people have applied for asylum with a false plan.
People who use this method leave the country illegally with many possible financial, human, and psychological risks. The facilities provided in the refugee camps are extremely inadequate, and cases can sometimes take years to process.
Fortunately, the medical community has never used the asylum method and is choosing alternative ways to migrate, as mentioned earlier.
Migration of doctors and physician-specific migration methods
As you know, a general medical degree is a master’s degree. So, what is the value of this degree in different countries? If a doctor or dentist wants to immigrate, what is the solution? Which of the following categories is appropriate and possible for this group? According to research, most doctors do not want to migrate by marriage and childbirth. They will automatically receive citizenship if they are born in a country subject to soil principle. Another method is asylum, which is so low-level for the doctors that they won’t choose it because they know that they will suffer irreparable damage. Therefore, most of them are willing to act legally.
The most appropriate migration methods for physicians are:
- Financial viability and investment
- Work
- Study
Doctors who are interested in migrating to foreign countries are divided into several categories.
- Doctors who have a medical degree and wish to practice medicine abroad: must obtain residency by work. There are countries for them to apply for their work visas.
- Doctors who wish to study abroad: They can apply for a specialty or Ph.D. How to proceed and choose a country is one of the first questions that they might have.
- Doctors who are well-off and willing to work in a field other than medicine abroad: Some want to reside in a foreign country and spend their retirement there.
