Requirements for doctors to immigrate to Canada

If you are a doctor and have graduated outside of Canada, you must go through the following steps and meet the following requirements to immigrate to Canada.
Applicants must have a medical degree in a university-approved and are on the global medical universities list. The next step is to apply for a permit from the Canadian Medical Council. The applicants must complete a one-year postgraduate course and obtain a formal certificate from the Canadian College of Family Physicians or the Royal College of Physicians and Canadian surgeons or Quebec Medical College.
But what are the requirements for obtaining a license from the MCC (Medical Council of Canada)? Receiving a Canadian Medical Council permit has some prerequisites in which the applicants must pass the required exams by the Canadian Medical Council. These exams have two stages. The second condition is that the applicant must have completed advanced studies for at least 12 months. Passing the Canadian Medical Council exams and getting approval from this organization does not mean that you can work in Canada. Before entering Canada, you can take this organization’s first exam, but you must be present in Canada for the second stage. After passing all the Canadian Medical Council exams, you must get the medical supervisors’ approval in your chosen province or state. You can see the list of the Provincial Medical Regulatory Authority in the following.

State / Province Provincial Medical Regulatory Organization
Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta
British Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia
Manitoba College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba
New Brunswick College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick
Newfoundland and Labrador College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland & Labrador

Equivalence steps in Canada

Doctors must first present their qualifications to continue their studies and work in Canada. If Canada approves your university degree, you can take its medical council exams. The equivalence process in Canada has three steps.

1.      In the first stage, the applicant must take the Mccqe1 exam (the initial stage of the Canadian Medical Council exam). This online test takes one day. Currently, more than 80 countries and more than 500 centers around the world take this test. Therefore, the applicants can take the test outside of Canada.

2.      The second stage of equivalence is that the physician must take the national assessment collaboration test or NAC. This test takes one day, and one’s abilities must be approved to measure the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for passing postgraduate courses. This test is for people who want to get a residence permit in Canada.

3.      In the third step, the applicant must take the second stage of the Canadian Medical Council exam. This test takes two days and will assess the applicant’s medical skills. This test will measure the applicant’s medical knowledge and assess clinical skills, research, treatment, and behavioral abilities. This stage is held in Canada, and the applicant must be physically present in this country.

After completing all the steps, the person will receive a certificate called LMCC from the Canadian Medical Board.

However, it is not the end of doctors’ actions and the equivalence process. Because a person must obtain a medical license in a specific province and state to start working as a doctor in Canada and one needs to present an LMCC degree.

Doctors’ income in Canada

Your average annual salary of a doctor in Canada depends on your specialty, as your specialty determines your visit rate. As of 2018, the average yearly salary of a physician in Canada was:

·         281,000 dollars for family physicians

·         360,000 dollars for a medical professional

·         481,000 dollars for a surgeon

Physicians’ salaries in Canada start at 278,000 dollars and more than 769,000 dollars for ophthalmologists.

Highly specialized medical disciplines charge more, but they have longer working hours. Make sure you balance the decision about your income with other factors that can affect your choice of specialty. Keep in mind that other factors can be used to estimate your doctor’s yearly salary. Some specialties may make more annual salary, while they earn less on an hourly basis than other specialties.
