Finland Student Visa 2026

The Finland Student Visa, officially a residence permit for studies, allows non-EU/EEA students to live and study in Finland. This guide explains the main requirements, required documents, financial and insurance requirements, fees, and application process. It also covers processing times, interviews, possible refusal reasons, the D visa, and working while studying in Finland.

Receiving an offer from a Finnish university is a major step. Before you arrange the move, though, you need to sort out permission to live and study in Finland. For most students from outside the EU and EEA coming for more than 90 days, this means applying for a residence permit for studies through the Finnish Immigration Service, known as Migri.

People often call it a Finland student visa. That is the term used in this guide, but the application itself is for a residence permit. Start preparing once your admission is confirmed: financial evidence, insurance and an appointment to prove your identity all need attention before the process is complete. For more information about the requirements and application process, you can contact MIE for consultation.

Who needs a Finland student visa

EU/EEA and Swiss citizens do not need a student residence permit, although registration rules apply to longer stays. For other nationalities, studies lasting more than 90 days normally require one. A shorter course may require a short-stay visa, depending on citizenship. Doctoral applicants should check the residence permit route for scientific research.

The usual study route covers admission to a degree or vocational qualification, as well as eligible exchange studies. A course taught mainly online that does not require you to live in Finland does not qualify. Admission alone therefore does not settle the immigration question: the nature of the programme matters too.

Documents required for a Finland student visa

Prepare clear scans and keep the originals together for your appointment. The core documents for a first application are listed below; your circumstances may require additional attachments.

Document

What to prepare

Passport

A valid national passport and a colour copy of the page containing your personal details.

Passport photograph

A photograph no more than six months old, meeting the applicable photo instructions.

Admission evidence

The educational institution’s acceptance or attendance certificate.

Financial evidence

Bank statements covering the previous six months and any documented grant for living costs.

Tuition evidence

A receipt for paid tuition or confirmation of a scholarship, where applicable.

Insurance

A certificate showing the required cover and validity.

Legal stay abroad

Proof of lawful stay if you apply in a country where you are not a citizen.

Applicants under 18

Birth certificate and the required consent from parents or guardians.

Arrange translations and legalisation where required by Migri’s document instructions. Check names, dates and passport details across the attachments before uploading them.

Finland student visa financial requirements

For studies lasting at least a year, the standard first-year living-funds requirement is €9,600, equivalent to €800 per month. For a shorter period, calculate €800 for each month. Tuition that remains unpaid needs separate funding.

For example, if your first-year tuition is €10,000 and you have not paid it, you normally need €19,600 available for tuition and living costs. Once tuition is paid, submit the receipt alongside evidence of the living funds. A scholarship for living expenses can reduce the amount you must show; a tuition waiver covers tuition only.

The funds normally need to be in your own account and accessible from Finland. A parent’s promise to support you is not enough on its own. Family members can transfer money to you, but be ready to document its origin if asked. Expected earnings from a future Finnish job cannot meet the first permit’s financial requirement.

Lower thresholds can apply when the educational institution provides free accommodation or meals. Those exceptions require evidence of the support. For an ordinary self-funded application, budget using the standard amount.

Insurance requirements for international students

Check the policy wording before paying. A policy marketed as travel or student insurance still needs to meet the requirements for your particular length of study.

Length of studies

Required insurance cover

Less than two years

Medical expenses up to €120,000.

At least two years

Pharmaceutical expenses up to €40,000.

The insurance excess must not exceed €300. Cover must be valid when you arrive and remain in place throughout your stay. If you purchase annual cover for a longer degree, arrange renewal before it expires. The amounts above are coverage limits, not policy prices.

How to apply for a Finland student visa

Submit your application through Enter Finland

Apply for your first student residence permit from abroad. In Enter Finland, choose the application for studies, complete the questions and attach your documents. A paper application is available if you cannot use the online service.

Set aside time to read the completed form before submitting it. Check that the programme dates match your admission letter and that the financial documents explain how both tuition and daily life will be funded. Save a copy of what you submit so you can refer to it later.

Arrange your identity appointment

An online first application still requires an in-person identity check. Use the country-specific instructions on Finland Abroad to find the responsible Finnish mission or authorised VFS Global application centre. You must be staying legally in the country where you apply.

Take your passport and original attachments to the appointment, where your identity and documents are checked and fingerprints are collected. Check local appointment availability early, especially if attending requires travel to another city or country.

Follow the application and answer requests

Keep access to your Enter Finland account and check it regularly. Migri may request further evidence. Read each request carefully and answer the specific points by the stated deadline. For an online application, submit supplementary material through Enter Finland.

If a document is unclear, explain the issue directly and provide supporting evidence. Uploading the same statement again without addressing the question is unlikely to resolve it.

Finland student visa processing time

Migri’s published estimate for a first student residence permit is one month in most cases and three months in a minority of cases, for both online and paper applications. Treat these figures as planning estimates rather than a promised decision date.

Your application enters the processing queue after you have proved your identity. Appointment availability and delivery of the residence permit card add time to the overall move. Two students who attend the same university and apply on the same day can receive decisions at different times.

Migri’s latest published update also reports that student residence permit applications are processed as urgent and that processing times can be longer when additional information is needed. Cases that need closer investigation can take longer, particularly where financial resources are unclear. Student applications are already treated as urgent without a separate urgency request.

If the start of term is approaching and you are still waiting, contact the university about its latest arrival date and any deferral arrangements. Avoid building your plans around another applicant’s timeline.

Preparing for a Finland student visa interview

Proving your identity is a standard part of the first application. An additional interview may also be required; the invitation tells you where to attend. Bring the requested documents, including proof that you are legally staying in the country where the interview takes place.

For preparation, review your own application rather than memorising a script. Be ready to explain your choice of programme, how it fits your education or career plans, and how you will pay for it. These are practical preparation topics, not an official list of interview questions.

Use the actual figures from your documents when discussing money. If a relative transferred funds, explain the arrangement accurately. If you do not remember a detail, say so rather than guessing. Your answers should describe the same circumstances as the written application.

Finland student visa rejection reasons

A useful way to assess refusal risks is to look at the requirements the application must satisfy. Insufficient evidence of funds, unsuitable insurance or studies that do not qualify can prevent approval. These are examples of unmet requirements, not a ranking of the most frequent refusal reasons.

False information and forged documents are particularly serious. Migri can refuse a permit where an applicant gives misleading information about identity, nationality or the real purpose of the stay. Review anything prepared on your behalf before it is submitted; it must accurately describe your situation.

If you receive a negative decision, read the reasons and the attached appeal instructions. They identify the relevant Administrative Court, deadline and required documents. Any challenge should address the actual findings in the decision. Simply repeating that you have a university offer will not answer a concern about another requirement.

Travelling to Finland after approval

Students can apply for an optional D visa alongside the residence permit. It allows travel after the residence permit and D visa have been issued and the visa sticker is in the passport, without waiting for the residence permit card to arrive abroad. The D visa does not speed up the permit decision.

This option suits applicants who can travel promptly: Migri says to apply only if you can reach Finland within two weeks of permit approval and collect the card there. Otherwise, follow the instructions for receiving your card abroad before travelling.

Studying and working after you arrive

Higher education degree students can receive a continuous A permit; other study routes generally use a temporary B permit. A student permit can cover the duration of the studies, but you must continue meeting its conditions. Check the validity dates in your decision and apply for an extension before expiry if necessary.

Paid work in any field is permitted for an average of 30 hours per week over the year. Some weeks can exceed that amount, including during holidays, provided the annual average stays within the limit. Degree-related internships and thesis work have specific exceptions. Arrange working hours around your studies and keep track of them with your employer.

Conclusion

Applying for a Finland student residence permit requires more than receiving admission from a Finnish university. Students need to prepare sufficient funds, suitable insurance, the required documents, and complete the identity verification process correctly. Understanding the application steps, processing times, and permit conditions can help students plan their move more effectively. Before applying, always check the latest requirements and instructions from Migri and the Finnish authorities.
